Famous Hollywood Actor finally gets his High School Diploma

Los Angeles - Mark Wahlberg has earned his high school diploma.

The 42-year-old actor, who dropped out of school when he was a teenager, secretly been taking classes online last year and graduated over the summer.

The Pain & Gain star shared his story with the Huffington Post on Monday, writing: "I never made it past the ninth grade. My circumstances were not unlike millions of other teens today, who live in tough working class neighbourhoods surrounded by drugs, violence and crime, and who struggle to stay on the right path without positive influences.

"Most high school dropouts don't end up with successful careers in Hollywood. I was lucky. Compared with high school graduates, dropouts are more likely to be unemployed, in poor health, living in poverty or on public assistance."

'Keep believing in yourselves'

He added: "For almost a year, I've been taking classes and studying any chance I could get - on the set, travelling for work and at home. It has been both humbling and challenging, but I'm happy to report that I am officially a high school graduate, having received my diploma this summer."

The actor, who has four children with his wife Rhea Durham, is now hoping to help other young people graduate via his charity, the Mark Wahlberg Youth Foundation.

He wrote: "To those students struggling every day and - most importantly - to those who are looking for a second chance, I have a message for you: never give up.

"Keep believing in yourselves and don't make small plans. You are not alone. I can now look at my kids every day knowing that I didn't just do this for me - I did it for them, and I did it for all the other teens and adults who have inspired me by their commitment to graduate."

ACTIVITIES FOR INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL LIBRARY MONTH

SUGGESTED ACTIVITIES FOR INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL LIBRARY MONTH

OCTOBER 2013
The theme for the month is
SCHOOL LIBRARIES: DOORWAYS TO LIFE
Contact a school library in another country to exchange messages or undertake a co-operative activity, perhaps using e-mail or the Web. Use IASL Online and Education World to make contact (see website addresses below).

 With your learners, search IASL Online and the Internet for information about school libraries in other countries. Use the results as the basis for a discussion on ways in which school libraries differ around the world. Try to access other school libraries’ web sites, and construct one for your school library.

 Organise an Open Day in your school library and invite parents and other members of the local community to attend it. Let learners demonstrate the online catalogue, computer-based services …or show new books or other resources.

 Arrange a Book Fair with an international theme. This might include highlighting books about other countries (especially African countries), books by authors from other countries, or books in other languages.

 Visit the GiggleIT website and participate in the "Through our window – the colours
of our land" Project (see website address below).

 Mount displays (of books, DVDs, CDs, audiocassettes and/or CD-ROMs) with a Library Week theme, not only in the school library, but also in the school entrance area or an outside location. Involve learners.

Attend the Library and Information Association of South Africa’s Pre-conference workshop for School Library and Youth Services on Saturday, 5 October 2013 at the Centre for the Book in Cape Town and celebrate school libraries with the theme: School libraries and youth services transforming literacy (see www.liasa.org.za).

 Let’s celebrate! Join together with other local school librarians, librarians, and people who support school libraries, to celebrate International School Library Day. Invite your school principal. Invite your IMG manager, circuit team manager or curriculum adviser. Present them with reminders of school libraries, e.g. mousepads, bookmarks, balloons, badges.

Dear Parents, Colleagues, Friends

BAZAAR 2013 POSTPONED to Saturday 5 October 2013

We have decided to postpone our annual Bazaar to Saturday 5 October 2013.  The main reasons for this decision are:
   1.  Weather:  Due to the 60 - 80% rain forecast;
   2.  To give our parents and the community more time - so that we can maximize support, since this is our main fundraiser for the year.

Please share this information with family and friends. Also be so kind to print the attached poster, with the new date and info. and display it where your family, colleagues and friends can see.

Thank you

Free Trees for Arbor Week

Arbor Month

Join our Arbor Week Celebrations
Celebrate Arbor Week by dropping off your old newspapers at any of our Garden Centres on 6 September and we’ll give you a FREE Indigenous Tree! Limited to 1 per family. What an amazing way to help the environment and to help decrease your carbon footprint. What’s more, with every tree you purchase, you will receive a free tree of the same variety. T's and C's apply.
Where it comes from ....
The great idea of turning tree-planting into a special event that encourages urban greening began with a visionary man called J.Sterling Morton. The first arbour day in 1872 was only aimed at the state of Nebraska in the US, but nonetheless, over a million trees were planted thanks to Morton’s passion and organisational skills.
Bridesy Northrop, a native of Conneticut began the move to globalize this fun day when he took the Arbour day and Village Improvement message to Japan where it was adopted enthusiastically. He later spread the word in Australia, Canada and Europe. Today, countries all over the world celebrate Arbour Day with tree planting drives.
South Africans love the concept so much, that we’ve gone from having an Arbour Day to having and Arbour week, and now you’ve got a whole month in which to join in and add your efforts to improving the environment by planting a tree!
How you can help ....
Plant a tree - Choose a good spot in your garden and turn the tree planting into a little ceremony with your family. Kids will love watching your tree grow, and you can use the occasion to teach them about global warming and how trees help to clean the air. There’s a certain magic over the years in watching a tree you planted with your own hands grow.
To read more visit www.stodels.com or visit one of our Garden Centres to speak to any of our many horticulturists.
